UPSA 2022 Annual Leadership Lecture: His Eminence Cardinal Turkson Champions Sustainable Resource Management and Ethical Leadership
The lecture “Tragedy of the Commons: Leadership for the Common Good,” delivered by His Eminence Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson at the UPSA Annual Leadership Lecture 2022, emphasized the importance of sustainable management of natural resources and ethical leadership. Cardinal Turkson highlighted the detrimental effects of illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” on Ghana’s water bodies and natural resources. He warned that prioritizing short-term gains over long-term sustainability could turn the country’s natural endowments into a curse rather than a blessing.
His Eminence Cardinal Turkson stressed the need for leaders to adopt a long-term vision that integrates short-term objectives without compromising future generations’ needs. He called for a responsible and ethical approach to resource management, urging leaders to consider the dignity and realities of the people they serve. This approach, he argued, would help ensure that the benefits of natural resources are shared equitably and sustainably.
Moreover, His Eminence Cardinal Turkson emphasized the role of solidarity and collective action in achieving the common good. He encouraged citizens to contribute to the development of society, particularly focusing on the vulnerable and less privileged. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility and ethical leadership, the nation can address its challenges more effectively and work towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
